Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, established in 1943 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee as part of the Manhattan Project. It is a federally funded research and development center managed by UT-Battelle, LLC for the DOE Office of Science, with more than 7,000 staff from over 70 countries and more than 5,000 visiting researchers each year. ORNL hosts Frontier, the world's first exascale supercomputer, the Spallation Neutron Source and the High Flux Isotope Reactor, and leads work in supercomputing and AI, neutron science, isotope production, advanced materials and manufacturing, clean energy and national security. Its annual DOE mission funding was about $2.6 billion in FY2024.
